Transcribing Music
writing down what you hear without using an instrument to help
RHYTHMS and MELODIES for you to transcribe.
You have to decide what the time signature is and notate both the rhythm and the melody but FIRST
if you are new to this just try and write down the rhythm (the semibreves and crotchets etc)
How to transcribe:
1. Mark 4 bars per line on your manuscript paper.
2. Listen through once and decide what the time signature is, mark this at the start of your line.
3. Listen through again and try and get the first and last bars. (Tap your foot along with the music and try and count where beat 1 of each bar is)
4. RHYTHM - Listen again for the other bars - mentally divide up each bar into beats and make a mark at the top of the line whenever you hear a note played.
5. PITCH - Try and work out your start and end notes from the guide note you are given.
6. Listen for where the melody rises and falls.
7. Listen as many times as needed til you have completed it.
IN AN EXAM SITUATION NEVER HAND IN A PIECE WITH EMPTY BARS - HAVE A GUESS - YOU MAY GET IT RIGHT!
